Last updated Jan 03, 2024

Travel is all about making memories.

We've compiled some unique and unforgettable travel experiences you can enjoy this winter, with direct flights meaning easy access from Edinburgh.

Here's our round up if you're after inspiration for your next getaway.

Hit the slopes in Switzerland

Zurich

Access the Swiss Alps from Zurich.

Explore the beautiful city and then slope off on your ski trip. In around an hour you can be in some world-famous resorts, with slopes suitable for all levels and abilities.

Flumserberg, Titlis, and Chaserrugg are three of the most visited resorts near the city but there are many others to try out with varying degrees of difficulty.

Head to Belfast and see where a certain TV show was made

Belfast

Time to plan that Belfast city break - you'll not regret it. Great for groups, couples and families, the city should also be high on your list of solo travel options, particularly if you're a Game of Thrones fan.

You can embark on walking tours, visit the places where some of the most famous scenes were shot, and tour the studio from which the show was made.

Plus, the food and drink scene is up there with the best as is the live music (it was crowned a UNESCO City of Music in 2021, after all). Find a packed-out folk night to toast your trip.

Take a once in a lifetime trip to Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls

Fly to Toronto and pay one of the world's most spectacular natural wonders a visit. Niagara Falls, well within day tripping distance, is a staple item on many bucket lists.

So far as trips go you'll do well to top Toronto. One of the most diverse cities in the world it is famous for its glittering skyline (dominated by the iconic CN Tower), world class restaurants, live sports, and parks and outdoor spaces.

Try the best food and drink Lisbon has to offer

Lisbon

Portugal’s capital is famed for its sun-stained pastel buildings, colourful café culture and unbelievable seafood.

The cityscape is dominated by the seven hills and there's no better place to take in the glorious surroundings from their terrace viewpoints - known locally as miradouros. Some of these spots even have cafes, so visitors can relax and enjoy the view with a cold drink of choice.

Word of advice. Don't leave without trying the pastel de nata. People visit Lisbon from far and wide to try these famous egg custard tarts, and with good reason.

Swap snow for sun and head to the Canaries

Tenerife

There are few better places to enjoy the sun than in the Canaries - and with direct flights from Edinburgh to Fuerteventura, Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote through the winter we've got you covered.

Fuerteventura often features among the top of winter 'book it' lists given its year-round sunshine, idyllic resorts, and outdoor activities; while Tenerife is a firm favourite for many reasons - not least the 12,000ft El Teide volcano - and Gran Canaria is loaded with world class beaches and lush green mountains.

Lanzarote is another top destination with its landscape, fantastic food and great weather.

Get to Gothenburg for a winter city break

Gothenburg

A city break not to be overlooked. Famous for its seafood and craft beer, Gothernburg is a treat.

So far as sightseeing goes you've got a mix of historic and contemporary architecture, a selection of museums, galleries and exhibitions along with amazing gardens and greenspaces.

Saddle up! A great way to see the city is by bike (this place does go by the strapline 'the world's most sustainable destination', after all).
