Last updated Dec 18, 2024

Longing for a long weekend away?

As those colder, darker months begin to roll in we could all do with something to look forward to.

If it's inspiration you're seeking we've got airlines operating direct flights to many of the best cities around this winter, so you'll always have plenty choice from EDI.

Here are some of our favourite city breaks.

Barcelona

Good news - there are even more flights to Barcelona over Christmas and New Year with Vueling.

We're spoiled for choice so far as European city breaks go, and this is the go-to option for many.

Think unmissable tapas bars, amazing seafood and some of the best paella you'll try. The food and drink alone is worth the trip, however there's so much more. Don't miss the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya which houses a remarkable collection of Catalan art, the Unesco-listed masterpiece La Pedrera, and, of course, the iconic La Sagrada Familia.

And a walk down La Rambla is an unforgettable experience with everything from outdoor markets, monuments and street performers to shops, restaurants and museums.

Budapest

Budapest is the ultimate taste of Hungary. On the western side of the Danube you've got Buda and on the eastern you've got Pest - and along the river lies some of the city's most celebrated attractions, from Buda Castle to the Széchenyi Chain Bridge.

When in town make sure you stop by one of the ruin bars, Szimpla Kert is probably the best known and guarantees a great night out. Plus the city has long been known as a 'food capital' and there's so much to sample - from sweet chimney cake and tasty goulash to traditional Hungarian Kolbász sausages. What's not to love...

Munich

Raise a stein and say cheers to Munich during, before and after Oktoberfest! While visitors from across the globe head to Bavaria for the legendary autumn festival, there's plenty more to love about this fascinating city.

Melding traditional Bavaria with modern Germany, Munich’s beautiful architecture along with fantastic museums, edgy art and abundance of breweries make it a firm favourite.

Plus you can slope off to the Bavarian Alps with some superb ski resorts nearby.

Copenhagen

Copenhagen is a city break Dane right. Saddle up and see the city on a cycle, chill out at the iconic Nyhavn Harbour (a top choice on a sunny day), and feast at Scandinavia's largest culinary festival or the numerous Michelin Star restaurants it's home to.

All that and you've got castles and palaces aplenty, along with Tivoli Gardens - the world's second oldest amusement park. This city is the epitome of Nordic cool.
