Basel is full of history, museums and a world-class art scene with the renowned ART Festival a big date in the city's annual calendar.

Located just to the east of the city is the Augusta Raurica - the oldest Roman ruins in the whole of Switzerland. Visitors won't want to miss out on a visit when in town, particularly as it's home to one of the best-preserved Roman theatres you'll find anywhere.

The zoological gardens are a popular destination in the city centre, home to a large number of exotic animals and underwater creatures. It is the ideal destination for a summer stroll.

Swimming in the Kleinbasel banks of the Rhine River is Basel’s most popular sport. Float down the river and through the Old Town before you dry off with a drink at one of the buvettes (refreshment stalls). For a more active visit, take part in one of the many water sports activities on offer such as paddleboarding. The bathing houses along the river, open from May to September, offer the perfect relaxation spots.

Hiking is one of the most popular activities in Switzerland. Baselland has a wealth of attractive hiking trails offering panoramic views and is well worth a visit at any time of year, but particularly when the cherry trees are in bloom.

From cosy traditional pubs to gourmet restaurants there is plenty to choose from no matter the vibe. At night, the busy city comes alive. There are a host of up-and-coming bars and cocktail lounges in the city as well as pubs with live music for a more chilled out atmosphere.

The intertwining of Basel’s medieval old town and modern metropolis makes this Swiss city a true postcard picture.
