Known as "The Paris of the East", Romania’s capital is quickly becoming a city break favourite.

Soak up the electric atmosphere in the bars and restaurants of the historic Lipscani district, before soaking yourself in what's said to be Europe's largest thermal bath complex.

One of the city's most impressive buildings is the Athenaeum concert hall, nicknamed the Romanian temple of arts. This architectural gem was classified as a historical monument in 2004 and while it's home to the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra, and open during performances, you can usually get a look around outwith showtimes too.

If more recent history is your thing, go and see the Parliamentary Palace - guided tours are available. With more than 3,000 rooms it's the world's largest parliament building and a fascinating window into Romania's Communist era.
